Morris County - Tourne County Park Update

Postby jorbanorm » Tue Jul 22, 2014 7:45 pm

First the good news. Last year JORBA obtained permission for a trail improvement project at the Tourne County Park in Boonton NJ. This involved a new section of the red trail that incorporates switchbacks as an alternate to the eroded fall line that gets wider and deeper by the year. We flagged a proposed route, captured a GPS track and provided this along with maps to the MCPC. It is currently under review. There has not been many trail improvements to the park in several years, and this would be among the first led by JORBA. While we are enthusiastic about providing this opportunity to the MTB community, recent activity once again puts our work at risk. The following message from the MCPC was received this week:

"Please be advised that we have had complaints from a nearby neighbor of The Tourne that “night riders” i.e. with head lights have been tearing through the park. They have been aggressively riding during daylight also.
They have removed the barriers from Top-O-Tourne and opened up the closed rogue trails. Some of this has been on the Red trail. If you have seen this or know who is doing this, please help us pass the identities to the Park Police."

We ask our members to help spread the word about recent developments. Hopefully we can influence change and prevent further setbacks.
