Jonathan's Woods update 4/12/10

Postby jorbanorm » Mon Apr 12, 2010 7:41 pm

Jonathan Woods is a parcel of land along the Denville, Rockaway and Boonton border that would likely have been developed into housing if not for the efforts of the grass roots organization POWWW. While off road cyclists have used this area for many years, future access is contingent upon land use management strategies decided by POWWW and the Morris County Park Commision. As this area has significant historic and natural resources, protection is a priority for this site.

At the last POWWW board meeting, JORBA presented the advantages of a multi-use trail plan, proper construction of sustainable natural surface trails, assessment and network design. While the presentation was appreciated, POWWW continues to investigate other trail managment strategies.

The trails within Jonathan Wood have experienced accelerated degradation as a result of motorized use. In addition, trail markers, Kiosks and gates have been repeatedly vandalized. Despite these setbacks, volunteers continue efforts to repair the damage and further other park improvements. JORBA would like to ask its members to support POWWW with it's efforts in Jonathan Woods. Look here for future volunteer opportunities.

POWWW (protect our wetlands, water and woods) is a non-profit organization based in Denville, NJ.
