2008 RVCC Activity Report

Postby Art White » Wed Nov 19, 2008 8:05 am

RVCC Chapter of Jorba would like to thank all the volunteers that generously gave their weekends to build and maintain trails at Ringwood State Park and Jungle Habitat. This year’s volunteer efforts added up to a grand total of 1195 hours. We are grateful for the hard work that volunteers put in to accomplish some major work in these parks in 2008.

At Ringwood State Park, RVCC crews completed a major re-route of the Ringwood/Ramapo Trail, originally co-aligned on a fire road. The new single-track route winds high on a ridge full of glacial erratic boulders and Cedar trees. After completion of that section, crews moved north to build the new Skylands Trail that connects the new section of the Ringwood/Ramapo to the Race Course Trail.

The finale to these combined projects took place in October when the IMBA Trail Care Crew came to Ringwood for a seminar. The event weekend, hosted by RVCC, brought out over 60 Volunteers. After a classroom session at Sterling Forrest Visitor Center, just down the road, mountain bikers, hikers, equestrians, New Jersey and New York Park Employees worked side by side on the last section of the Ringwood/Ramapo Trail re-route. The day sent many good vibes out onto the trails, and trail planning for next year is already underway.

On alternate weekends to the Ringwood workdays, Jeff Mergler and Dave VanWart led workdays at Jungle Habitat. Crews completed building of Lower Chute and Dump truck Trail, and more new trail building is planned for next year.

After completion of a sucessful 20th Anniversary Ringwood Fall Classic Race on September 7th, RVCC race promoter, Joe Fiorito retired from promoting. Joe has been a major influence and an important part of history in New Jersey mountain bike racing over the past 18 years. The funds from the race have kept RVCC active in maintaining trails in Ringwood State Park, Ramapo State Forrest and Jungle Habitat. Thank you Joe, and we look forward to seeing you out on the trails. As Joe steps down from race promoting, so will RVCC. It has been a great 20 years, but it is time to move on to other things. We have arranged to pass the race on to another club, so although RVCC will no longer be promoting, the race should stay on the Calendar for you to enjoy.

Happy Trails! :D

Wow... 1195 volunteer hours. As Frank said "Fantastic"

Thanks to all who volunteered their time.

It takes great leadership, planning and a lot of hard work to direct that many volunteer hours. Congratulations!
