2014 Race recap!

What is better than a great day of kid's bike racing in New Jersey.

Again more perfect weather conditions and a well groomed Kid's Korse. This is the 5th year in a row where weather has cooperated on the day of the race.......there is definitely a bit of divine intervention going on, kids on bikes must be something that brings out the best.

This season 65 kids came out. That's actually down from last season's total of 82 kids (our best result to date). There were lots of new faces and lots of returning racers but we think something was working against us somewhere. Our long term goal is that magic 100 racers. The thinking is that if we reach that number, we are definitely doing the right things with promotion and otherwise getting the word out to as many families as possible. We know that there's more than 100 racers out there but we need help to find them and encourage them to come out and give racing a try.

The racing went off without a hitch and even included an adult fun sprint that some took more seriously than others! This slow fat race organizer didn't come in dead last but I definitely trailed. We will include another adult event next season as it seems it was appreciated and enjoyed.

There were quite a few fast kids out there and New Jersey could develop racers as an export if they all keep at it and gain experience in the other kids races around the state.

First off the line at 0900 were 14 boy K-1 racers who did one lap of the course. After a tough lap, Kooper U earned the 1st place medal followed by Aidan K and Jesse C. The girls class started just after the boys and Sierra L crossed the line first with Mia R and Daniella W close behind. Lots of smiles and cheering parents. It's great to see most of these kids take off on their own and race off into the woods returning in about 10 minutes later having accomplished a tough lap relying only on their ability and determination.

Grade 2-3 seems to always be the largest class and this year was no exception. There were 17 boys on the starting line for the two lap event. Ryder B was the eventual winner with Zach A taking second and Luke C coming in third. The girls field was won by Julia R with Elizabeth V getting second and Vail C coming in third. Two laps is 1.2 miles so that means navigating the rock fields twice and that grassy hill twice. Great job by all for finishing strong.

The 4-5 boys and girls circle the course three times for a total distance of 1.8 miles. It's tough to do that at a race pace but lots of cheering and hard work got everyone through. Garrett G was first, Logan M came in second and Johnny B earned third. Many of the racers in this class were returning racers. Only Carolyn M entered the girls 4-5 race, good for her for coming out!

The 6-8 class included some returning boy and girl racers and other competitors who have been training. Julian L pulled ahead on his first lap and checked out, finishing on the top step of the podium. His younger brother Jessie L hung on for second place followed by Ethan H. The girls class was dominated and won by Nina M who demonstrated the results of lots of training rides. Second place went to Genesis M followed by Alina S in third.

Many thanks to all the parents who bring all those kids from all over the state.

Many thanks to all the volunteers, I hope I don't forget any, Jack, Brendan, Frank, Brian, Anne, Scott, Kathy, Rick, Geoff, Luke, Cole and special thanks to Ronda for managing all the registration and reporting the finishing order.

Thanks to Cycle Craft for their support

Recap of for the 4th Annual 2013 Hilltop Grasshopper

Wow, what a great day it was for kid's bike racing in New Jersey.

Perfect weather conditions and a Kid's Korse that was totally groomed for flow.

A total of 82 kids went racing for medals and swag and of course bragging rights. There were so many fast kids that will hopefully be back next year for more fun in the woods. It was truly inspirational to see that many kids on bikes in one place, all trying their best to earn a top three medal. As each of these kids moves up to higher grade classes, some incredibly fast racers will be developing in New Jersey.

The largest class of racers was the grade 2 – 3 boys with 27 racers tearing it up for two laps. Garret G stayed strong to finish first . Grade 2 – 3 girls were super competitive and a few top girls finishers even caught up to the boys pack that started about 2 minutes before them with Katie D winning convincingly.

The k – 1 class was the second largest class. These kids had to complete one lap of the same course that the bigger kids ride. There were some spills and tough rocky spots to navigate but everyone pushed through and came across the finish line safely with Luke S winning the boys group and Kiss T earning gold in the girls group.

Grade 4 – 5 riders had to complete 3 laps and this race reveals endurance and determination. It also reveals base level training. At this age group, the kids who ride a lot really do have a big advantage. The boys winner was Jessie L, a regular in the New Jersey bike racing scene. Watch for this name in the future. The girls gold medalist was Hollie N.

Grade 6 – 8 boys and girls raced together owing to the smaller total number of racers in this category. Nina M ended the race as the gold medal girl and would have been the 3 place finisher if racing against the boys. The top boys racer was Julian L, another racer who makes it look so easy to go fast. He's been riding a lot and it shows.

We look forward to hosting the 2014 Hilltop Grasshopper scheduled for August 16. Tell your friends how much fun you had at this season's race. It's never too soon to start training and it's hard to have more fun than riding your bike fast in the woods. The Kid's Korse is always open for riding or explore the trails in your area.

See you next season
